Is This Normal????

Recommended Posts

I just started muskie fishing last fall. Since then I have spent over $1000 on a new rod, reel, tackle box and many, many new lures. It's pretty much all I think about now. I have only caught one, but have had a lot of follows this year. There are no muskie lakes close to where I live, so I drive two hours north to Alexandria every week. On Sunday I spent 15 hours on the lake casting until my arm was ready to fall off. Then on the way home I was already thinking about the next time I can go muskie fishing. I'm beginning to think that I'm addicted. Is this normal??

Lonewolf,

Sounds like you have a mild case of Muskieitis. The only real cure is to sell all of your gear at a deeply discounted rate to me, wait 3 days, and go out panfishing. You will be cured.

Warning if you don't do this and happen to latch onto another.....You will have Muskieitis in its severest form, of which there is no known cure. This disease will end up costing you thousands of dollars and lots of time on the water. It also leads to further problems such as casting elbow, sever sunburns, mushy legs, and many sleepless nights.

GET RID OF YOUR STUFF NOW!!!! In its most lethal form it leads to stupid rambling such as this. grin.gifgrin.gifgrin.gifgrin.gif

I think it's too late for me. I already have the casting elbow, been sunbrunt twice already this year and can't sleep at night. It's funny, all it took was that first muskie and now i'm addicted. Oh well, it's all good. grin.gifgrin.gifgrin.gifgrin.gifgrin.gif

HAHA Welcome to the illness, it's too late to fight it now. You'd be best off keeping yourself happy by buying all that neat stuff you have been looking at while making other purchases.

It is an addiction, and Muskie Fisherman are FAR from NORMAL. Not too many people look forward to the nastiest coldest days in the fall as a good thing, looking for that one last chance to get on the open water before it freezes.

I only pray to god your girlfriend/wife is an understanding woman...

Good Luck...

PS, Lobster is driving me crazy this year almost to the point of frustration. I have seen fish (some big fish at that), but have yet to catch one of them... Big Goose Egg so far for me this year.

I know exactly how you feel about Lobster. My brother and I have been there four times this year and seen fish every time. On Sunday we had seven follows all on the same spot. Very frustrating. I had one on opening day, but it got off while my brother was trying to net it. **** net was too small. So I had to spend even more money on a new net. We are heading up to Cass Lake next weekend. Hopefully we will have better luck there.

I feel you on the lures, rods, reels, etc. I went out Monday with a couple of guys. One of them is a occasional muskie angler (about $500 in lures) and the other is a hardcore walleye man. I let the walleye man use one of my rods, and I gave him open access to my tackle box. I can finally have a good response to my wife when she says you have enough muskie gear for two guys! Anyway, I caught a real fat 41" and needless to say I have successfully converted the walleye guy to a muskie guy. On the drive home we made a list of his "must haves" and he is heading off shopping.

I feel your pain!!! I got addicted last week. Started on Tuesday using my dad's equipment and within 72 hours I have blown over $200 on new rod, reel, lures, mapbook, and am waiting for the next paycheck to get supply the tackle box. We went 3 days straight and 4 out of 5 and can't wait until tomorrow, when I get to get back out. I don't know how I am going to get through this winter!

The sickness progressively gets worse as time goes by. It doesn't matter how often you fish nor does it help if you catch lots and/or big fish. I suggest starting a separate "musky account" at your bank. If this account dries up, you can always resort to investments and retirement funds. I personally think the whole affair is perfectly normal and mourn for those not yet blessed with such a passion.
