Trolling Advice

Recommended Posts

I am looking for a couple of new trolling rigs. For the most part, I fish pool 4 for saugers and walleyes. If trolling is the technique of choice for a certain day, I currently either long line with non-trolling rods in shallow, or use lead core over deeper water.

For the new setups, what kind of action do I want in the rods? The few I have picked up seem either extremely stiff, or exactly the opposite. I want to keep the rods relatively short (~7ft) and only would ever run 2 out of the boat.

What kind of line would you use? I am leaning towards some type of super-line (I think), and I know that this should greatly impact the action on the rods I choose.

Is a leader necessary? If so, would it be wise to use swivels, crosslocks, just a knot, etc?

I'm sure that everybody would go about setting these rigs up differently, but I am just making sure that I am on the right track! Thanks for your input/advice.

Cabelas depthmaster 7'6" With the line counter reels. Then 20 pound power pro in hi vis yellow for nightime trolling. Then buy a spool of 20 pound flourocarbon and make 5 foot leaders by attaching a swivel on one end, and a crosslock on the other. Works for me
