Boss Hogg
Is there a type of grass that I can plant under evergreen trees? I have Red Pine, White Pine and Balsams. The branchs have been cut up to about six to seven feet high from the ground. Last year I had some grass started, but it didn't make it. I keep the falling needles clear as best as I can. Thanks
KEN W
Have the soil tested to see how acidic it is.They will tell you what to add.
MJBaldwin
I'm having this same problem mine are cut up About the same distance as well. When we bought the house two summers ago there were a bunch of plants which we tilled up and now trying to get grass there but there are so many needles. Enough about my situation I have done some research and a heard putting lime down works I just bought a bag from FF for about 10 bucks I'll let you know if it helps any but I'm open to try other things too... nofishfisherman
I've had the same problem. I also have mine cut up about 6-7 feet. When I bought the house the branches where sagging down to the ground and I shoveled out pine needles that were 6-8 inches deep.I did have some luck with a shade tolerant grass but it didn't do super well closer in to the tree, mainly it took around the drop line and in a foot or so.I've left it alone the last year or two since the dog has taken a liking to running sprints around the tree as fast as he can so he'll just tear it up even if I can get something to grow. Bowfin
Evergreen needles make the soil acidic and grass doesn't like acidic soil. Putting and working lime in the soil may help. Also, if the ground is shaded by the conifers it impedes grass growth.
