Apple River Flowage

Fished Apple River by Amery today. First time on it, though my buddy has bass-fished it. We boated 3 muskies -- 42", 29", 25". The 42 and 29 bit a Stomper (topwater similar to a Topraider) and the small one, on a white spinnerbait (buddy was bass fishing). Also got a nice 18" bass on the Stomper. Water temp was around 56, give or take a half degree. Fun day overall, and a nice piece of water with lots of wood. Nice to see the shore owners leaving it natural.
I'm kind of new to muskie fishing and I have a question concerning crankbaits, specifically Grandma's, Jake's, etc... What's the best way to work them? Straight retrieve, jerk, twitch, reel and pause, combinations of all of the above? And how do you know when it's best to do which. The obvious answer would be to let the fish tell you what they want. Any input is appreciated.

P.S. -- For those looking for a net, I got a Beckman Magnum Finsaver Pen at the new Gander Mountain in Forest Lake at 20% off. $95.00 -- Good price from what I'm seeing on the internet. Don't know if they have any left.
