Tricks for wrapping guides

Recommended Posts

I have a couple ice blanks on the way. I was wondering if there are any good ways to keep the micro guides in place on the shaft while I am tying? It didn't seem like there was enough surface area for the masking tape to hold tight when I did my first rod. Thought about trying a dab of glue but i don't know if that will work. Any tips?

In my opinion the best way to hold micros down for wrapping is to use Flex Coat's Guide Foot Adhesive. It's designed for temporary attachment of guides before wrapping. It only takes a little bit to hold the guide in place while you wrap and when done wrapping you can still adjust the guide as needed.

Give Bill a call at Midwest Rod and Reel. He sells it for under 3 bucks and one stick lasts a long time.

I've never used the glue to hold down the guides, and I've also never wrapped micro guides but on my past rods I've found it was a lot easier to use a small strip of electrical tape. Just cut a small sliver off and use that, It's nice because you can stretch it out so it doesn't cover up the whole guide...

The glue may be a little easier though just thought I'd chime in

I know I made an earlier comment about how well the glue stick works. It really does work great but there is another method and I've been using it almost exclusively lately.

There are tiny little bands called orthodontic ligatures. For you builders that use static guide placement to position your guides these things are the bomb! You can slide the guide up and down the blank until you get just the right spot.

I first learned of them on another forum from Chuck up in Alexandria. Chuck, if you see this I hope you don't mind me posting your pictures. A picture is worth a thousand words.

Where can you find these?

Hey Chad! I haven't been on here for a long time. No problem posting those pictures. Anything to help out rodbuilders!

I'm a little outspoken and ornery about attaching micro guides for wrapping. I tell everyone I know - "Just try them!" I got samples from my dentist and that convinced me. I found that they work well until you get to a spot on the blank that is about 1/4" in diameter. After that they really get tight and might pop if you're adjusting guides much.
