Winnipeg and Tobin Ice Walleyes

Recommended Posts

Have any of you been to Winnipeg or Tobin ice fishing for walleyes. Seems like two years ago was Winnipeg's prime, haven't seen much on them lately. Have things slowed down up there?

Lake Winnipeg is as good as ever for fishing. The freeze up was bad though, so travel is difficult, little snow and lots of ridges and cracks. Tough on trucks and snowmobiles. Atv's and Utv's are the way to go right now, but that could change by the hour.

I have been fishing Lake Winnipeg for the last 5 years in a row. Always go late March for 3-4 days with 4 guys. The first time we went there by far was the best year. Lots of fish and good size. Every year it has seemed to get worse for us. We still plan on making a trip there this March, but hope things improve. Water was really dirty last year had to move further down the lake to get out of the dirty water. We work hard move every 10-20 minutes if we don't find fish, so we aren't just sitting there waiting for the fish to find us. Always a fun time, but for us it was better 5 years ago.

Other than getting a guide. Where is the best place to go out of on Winnipeg? I've read of going out of Winnipeg Beach. Do the walleyes work their way south as the winter progresses?

Google says Tobin is like 17hrs from the Twin Cities. Is the drive worth it, or is it better just to cut the drive in half and go to Winnipeg. I'm sure it kind of a matter of preference.

Thanks in advance.

The 2 main areas the public gets on the lake are at Chalet Beach on the west side of the lake and Balsam Bay on the east side. Winnipeg Beach is also another option as well as Riverton. Just depends on weather ice conditions andwhere the fish are biting best.
