Freezers getting full!

Recommended Posts

I think I might have to make a fur run here soon if it doesn't get any colder. I've got two freezers almost full and had to hang these last two up in the garage.

I managed to call in 4 grays this morning and came home with two.

The lack of snow has really helped with the calling of the fox. I just turn the volume up for a while then cut it off and you can hear them tearing around in the brush. Hit the light and let them work their way in.

First spot, heard one come in from across the road, then it ran right in front of me. I had to let it get a little farther away as I would have really tore him up.

Second spot I set up on a North/South road with a trail heading off to the West. I set up SE of the trail with the caller NW of me. Started the caller and after a few minutes I shut it off and it sounded like a herd of them was coming in. Turned out to be two. One came in to 20 yards but the brush was too thick for a shot. It turned and ran back and the other one came running down the trail and ended up taking a load of #4 buck. The other one kept circleing me and I almost got a shot at it once but then it took off. That's alright, need to leave a little seed for next year. Both fox tonight ended up being males. One looked to be real old by the looks of his teeth. I'll be venturing a little farther from home tonight so wish me luck. I think Mitch might even go with tonight if I can get him away from his girlfriend and his phone.

moraarcher,

I set up where I think the animal won't come in down wind of me. There's no guarantee they won't come in across an open field down wind of me but you can't cover all the bases. Setting up on the South side of some woods with a North wind will work as well as setting up in the woods but the same goes for there. With say a North wind I'll try to hunt 10 yards South of a East/West trail with the caller 5-10 yards North of the trail. A lot of times they will come from a long ways along those trails and it puts them right in ffront of me for the shot.

As for the length of the set it all depends on how I feel, if the wind shifts while calling or depth of the snow.

Right now with minimal snow they should come in fast if they're going to come. So I've been spending about 20 minutes at a set and sometimes I'll start calling and after a few minutes I'll just feel like somethings not right,so I'll just shut the caller off and set for a bit then sneak out of there and try it another time.

Thanks for the info. We can't hunt in mn with lights until after Jan 1. What kind of lights do you use? I've got a 3 d cell mag led light that I rigged with a red lens but it's not attached to my gun plus a big spot light. I may go out just before dark this week. Can't wait until the full moon, should be fun.

moraarcher,

Mitchell uses a XLR 250 kill light and I use my day to day flashlight with a red lense. It's a Fenix TK11,red lense and pressure switch. Both work great but with Mits you could easily shoot 200 yards with it. I know that won't work in Minnesota but just saying. I'll be hunting hard this week trying to fill my bobcat tag here in Wisconsin but back over to Minnesota in a week or so with the lights to try some of our thicker properties.
