The Mystery of Edwin Drood...

Recommended Posts

Our nephew had the male lead in his high school's musical, "The Mystery of Edwin Drood". Since it is his senior year, hubby and I made the trek to the suburbs of Chicago to take in one of the performances. This was the first test for my 60D in low light conditions. I still have a ton to learn, but here are some of the highlights.

The cast members are playing actors who are performing a play. It is a show within a show. The actors have to have 7 different endings memorized, since the audience votes on who the murderer is. There are actually three different things the audience decides during the show. It was a riot! This show rivals some college productions we have seen.

John Jasper (played by the nephew), has an opium induced dream near the beginning of the performance. He is standing on a wooden bed in the midst of his hallucination.

In the middle, the cast performs a song and dance number "Off to the Races". It is totally random, but in the vaudeville style that the play is written in. The actors would try to fit in songs that were crowd favorites to keep people coming back night after night. Nephew is the one on the far left.

In order to have a happy ending, the audience voted on who they wanted to fall in love. That night it was John Jasper and Princess Puffer - a 70 year old prostitute.
