Humminbird 385ci or 597ci HD

I have been looking at purchasing a new GPS for the upcomming ice fishing season. This unit will be used year round, but the GPS capabilities will mainly be of use during the hardwater season. I have an old Lowrance Expedition and I am looking at upgrading due to wanting a bigger screen size, plus with the buy out from Adam Outdoors, I'm leaning towards Humminbird because of my liking for the Lakemaster chips. I have found a deal where I can get the 597ci HD for only $100 more than the 385ci. For those of you who have used either of these units during the hardwater or open water season, what are some pros? cons? For those who bought the 385ci, do you regret going with the smaller screen or not? How accurate is the GPS capabilites when searching for your "hot spots" on the ice? Any information is greatly appreciated and will help in the process of which unit I choose for the upcomming ice season

Thanks,

Chris

Hey FishSlayer,

I own the 597ci HD DI. I picked it up at the start of the year and it has been a great unit. I find it to be very accurate and the built in GPS is great when paired with a Navionics or LakeMaster map. I was in the same boat as you until earlier today. I currently own a Marcum LX-3tc ( great unit by the way ) and I planned on selling it to a buddy of mine and buying a X9 20 transducer to pair it up with my H'bird 597 HD DI. I thought it would be worth trying...so I was looking on the Humminbird site and didn't see the 597 HD DI model listed on the HSOforum as a compatible unit. I contacted Humminbird and this is the response I got back from them today:

"Question: Does the X9 20 Iceducer work with the 597ci HD DI? It is not listed, but I see the 597 ci is? I just to confirm before I place this order. Thanks"

"Answer: The XI 9 20 will work with your unit however you will not get the flasher mode.

Good Boating and Fishing

Tangie"

So my advice to you is if you go this direction make sure not to buy the DownImaging model, as it will not display the IceFishing Flasher mode properly which is baffling to me because it has the IceFishing mode as an option along with the Flasher dial through the menu system.

Perhaps someone there can prove Tangie@Humminbird wrong? I would be happy to hear it if that was the case.

Hope this helps in your decision.

Shawn

Shawno,

Thanks for the information, I really appreciate it. That is a problem that the ice fishing mode wouldnt work with the ducer. However, for the purpose I am looking for in the unit is mainly the GPS capabilities. I already own a Vexilar FL-20 and I am overly content with the real speed time of my flasher. Thanks again shawno, it is greatly appreciated.

Thanks,

Chris

i was also looking at the 385ci for a secondary flasher unit and the gps option that could mount the wheeler and sled... i like my lowrance out & back with navionics chip but i'm looking at switching over to a lakemaster chip and i think this set-up would be better.... what are some more opinions.... i hope i'm not hi-jacking!! LOL!!

I have used a HB 345c the last couple winters for ice fishing. the 345c is basically the same as the 385ci minus the GPS, I use a garmin w/lakemaster chip for that part. I only have run into a few problems with the 345c, It does get Interference if you are fishing close to other more power full flashers (vexilars etc..) but it is manageable. I also find that when using the flasher screen in +20' of water there is a very very slight lag on the screen that you don't notice on a normal flasher. As for summer it would always be nice to have the bigger screen.

i dont have much experience with it yet but just got the 597 ci on sale 25% off in Rogers. Love the large color screen, gps, navionics chip (it works with both), and all the info it provides. I have also already purchased the portable pack and ducer via ama zon for ice time. it was a very good deal there.

I have the 385ci portable unit with the lakemaster chip and absolutely love it. This will be my 1st winter using it, so Im very excited. I have loved it in the boat. I had a older lowrance before that had a much bigger screen, so I was kinda skeptical about the smaller screen at 1st, but it wasnt a issue at all converting over to it. The size of the screen wont be a issue.

    • It’s done automatically.  You might need an actual person to clear that log in stuff up.   Trash your laptop history if you haven’t tried that already.
    • 😂 yea pretty amazing how b o o b i e s gets flagged, but they can't respond or tell me why I  can't get logged in here on my laptop but I can on my cellular  😪
    • I grilled some brats yesterday, maybe next weekend will the next round...
    • You got word censored cuz you said        B o o b ies….. haha.   Yeah, no… grilling is on hiatus for a bit.
    • Chicken mine,  melded in Mccormick poultry seasoning for 24 hours.  Grill will get a break till the frigid temps go away!
    • we had some nice weather yesterday and this conundrum was driving me crazy  so I drove up to the house to take another look. I got a bunch of goodies via ups yesterday (cables,  winch ratchet parts, handles, leaf springs etc).   I wanted to make sure the new leaf springs I got fit. I got everything laid out and ready to go. Will be busy this weekend with kids stuff and too cold to fish anyway, but I will try to get back up there again next weekend and get it done. I don't think it will be bad once I get it lifted up.    For anyone in the google verse, the leaf springs are 4 leafs and measure 25 1/4" eye  to eye per Yetti. I didnt want to pay their markup so just got something else comparable rated for the same weight.   I am a first time wheel house owner, this is all new to me. My house didn't come with any handles for the rear cables? I was told this week by someone in the industry that cordless drills do not have enough brake to lower it slow enough and it can damage the cables and the ratchets in the winches.  I put on a handle last night and it is 100% better than using a drill, unfortatenly I found out the hard way lol and will only use the ICNutz to raise the house now.
    • I haven’t done any leaf springs for a long time and I can’t completely see the connections in your pics BUT I I’d be rounding up: PB Blaster, torch, 3 lb hammer, chisel, cut off tool, breaker bar, Jack stands or blocks.   This kind of stuff usually isn’t the easiest.   I would think you would be able to get at what you need by keeping the house up with Jack stands and getting the pressure off that suspension, then attack the hardware.  But again, I don’t feel like I can see everything going on there.
    • reviving an old thread due to running into the same issue with the same year of house. not expecting anything from yetti and I already have replacement parts ordered and on the way.   I am looking for some input or feedback on how to replace the leaf springs themselves.    If I jack the house up and remove the tire, is it possible to pivot the axel assembly low enough to get to the other end of the leaf spring and remove that one bolt?   Or do I have to remove the entire pivot arm to get to it? Then I also have to factor in brake wire as well then. What a mess   My house is currently an hour away from my home at a relatives, going to go back up and look it over again and try to figure out a game plan.           Above pic is with house lowered on ice, the other end of that leaf is what I need to get to.   above pic is side that middle bolt broke and bottom 2 leafs fell out here is other side that didnt break but you can see bottom half of leaf already did but atleast bolt is still in there here is hub assembly in my garage with house lowered and tires off when I put new tires on it a couple months ago. hopefully I can raise house high enough that it can drop down far enough and not snap brake cable there so I can get to that other end of the leaf spring.
