Arkansas Bassin

I am headed down to Arkansas in early November to visit a college friend who lives in Little Rock. We are planning on fishing Lake Ouachita, Hamilton and maybe Degray over the long weekend I am there. We are going to be chasing largies, spots, wipers and stripers. I am thinking these fish should be schooled up on points headed back into creeks to chase shad that time of year.

Does anybody have any experience fishing large reservoirs like these in the fall? What baits and patterns do you think will be effective? Anybody have any ideas?

I fished a college event on Kentucky lake oct. 31 - nov. 1 a few years ago and we caught all our fish in the backs of small pockets and creek arms. The shad were loaded in those areas. Caught them all day long on walking baits, spinnerbaits, and traps. It was a little difficult to get many large fish, but caught close to 40 each day. I would think you'll be looking at the same situation in Arkansas - especially on Ouachita which seems to be a good topwater lake year round... I am definitely not an expert when it comes to reservoirs, but thats has been my limited experience on them in the fall.

I fished DeGray Last fall for a Division Championship event, and the fish were hard to come by. Mainly do to the water levels down about 12 feet from where they should have been. We did manage to catch some Spots that were chasing shad. We caught them on Zara Spooks. We fished deep up in one of the larger channels flipping creature baits and did catch a few nice largemouths. If the water is back to normal this year I would think the fishing would be a lot better. There are many points, submerged rock piles and trees to fish. And the scenery is absolutley beautiful down there. Good Luck to ya!

Great tips guys! I am really excited to put in some time on these large reservoirs.

bryguy247,

How difficult is it to find the submerged rockpiles? My buddy who lives down there says that a friend of his said to fish the deep rocks 18-22' that time of yera for big largies.

We mainly stumbled upon them, in the North West (west of the state park) area of the lake. They may show up on a good lake map. The ones we fished rose 4 to 5 feet from the bottom in 12 ft of water. Which would make the statement you heard, fishing 18 to 20 feet deep right becuase the water was down about 12 feet when I was there. There were guys doing ok on rock piles, but the stuff I fished was more like truck size boulders. We would drop shot around one, then move 20 feet and there would be another boulder, and kept working them back and forth. The fun part was while we would work those for the largemouth, about once an hour a school of Spots would blow up the water near by, so we would charge over to them and hit a couple with a spook and than go back to the rocks. But if they weren't breaking the surface for shad, we couldn't get the spots to bite on anything. I would say fish how you like, but always have a spook ready to hit those spots.

bryguy,

That is why I am excited to get down there to chase after some schooling spots! Did you catch any nice spots? I know the size of the fish won't be huge but I know they put up a great fight. Did you run into any stripers or wipers?

Late November will be more of a small crankbait, jig and jerkbait bite depending on water temp.

I was just down in OK this past weekend, grew up in NE OK, so I have some decent experience fishing reseviors.

Right now the shad are migrating to the backs of the creeks and it is a good top water and sqaurebill bite. But obviously things will be very different in a month.

But the three things I mentioned above should work and I agree with your take on where to start. Hopefully your friend who lives down there has a clue and can eliminate some water before you get down there. I would call a few tackle shops in Little Rock or Hot Springs and get a better feel for what the water temp in closer to your trip.

Water temp over in OK this past weekend was 72.

Thanks Hydrashack! I will definately give some bait stores down there a call. There aren't any good message board sites that I could find for this area. Does anyone know of any good Missouri/Arkansas sites?

    • By The way that didn't work either!! Screw it I'll just use the cellular.
    • It’s done automatically.  You might need an actual person to clear that log in stuff up.   Trash your laptop history if you haven’t tried that already.
    • 😂 yea pretty amazing how b o o b i e s gets flagged, but they can't respond or tell me why I  can't get logged in here on my laptop but I can on my cellular  😪
    • I grilled some brats yesterday, maybe next weekend will the next round...
    • You got word censored cuz you said        B o o b ies….. haha.   Yeah, no… grilling is on hiatus for a bit.
    • Chicken mine,  melded in Mccormick poultry seasoning for 24 hours.  Grill will get a break till the frigid temps go away!
    • we had some nice weather yesterday and this conundrum was driving me crazy  so I drove up to the house to take another look. I got a bunch of goodies via ups yesterday (cables,  winch ratchet parts, handles, leaf springs etc).   I wanted to make sure the new leaf springs I got fit. I got everything laid out and ready to go. Will be busy this weekend with kids stuff and too cold to fish anyway, but I will try to get back up there again next weekend and get it done. I don't think it will be bad once I get it lifted up.    For anyone in the google verse, the leaf springs are 4 leafs and measure 25 1/4" eye  to eye per Yetti. I didnt want to pay their markup so just got something else comparable rated for the same weight.   I am a first time wheel house owner, this is all new to me. My house didn't come with any handles for the rear cables? I was told this week by someone in the industry that cordless drills do not have enough brake to lower it slow enough and it can damage the cables and the ratchets in the winches.  I put on a handle last night and it is 100% better than using a drill, unfortatenly I found out the hard way lol and will only use the ICNutz to raise the house now.
    • I haven’t done any leaf springs for a long time and I can’t completely see the connections in your pics BUT I I’d be rounding up: PB Blaster, torch, 3 lb hammer, chisel, cut off tool, breaker bar, Jack stands or blocks.   This kind of stuff usually isn’t the easiest.   I would think you would be able to get at what you need by keeping the house up with Jack stands and getting the pressure off that suspension, then attack the hardware.  But again, I don’t feel like I can see everything going on there.
    • reviving an old thread due to running into the same issue with the same year of house. not expecting anything from yetti and I already have replacement parts ordered and on the way.   I am looking for some input or feedback on how to replace the leaf springs themselves.    If I jack the house up and remove the tire, is it possible to pivot the axel assembly low enough to get to the other end of the leaf spring and remove that one bolt?   Or do I have to remove the entire pivot arm to get to it? Then I also have to factor in brake wire as well then. What a mess   My house is currently an hour away from my home at a relatives, going to go back up and look it over again and try to figure out a game plan.           Above pic is with house lowered on ice, the other end of that leaf is what I need to get to.   above pic is side that middle bolt broke and bottom 2 leafs fell out here is other side that didnt break but you can see bottom half of leaf already did but atleast bolt is still in there here is hub assembly in my garage with house lowered and tires off when I put new tires on it a couple months ago. hopefully I can raise house high enough that it can drop down far enough and not snap brake cable there so I can get to that other end of the leaf spring.
