Guest
Thanks for posting that article. It is a good one. I got it by email the other day and would have liked to post the link but I have no idea how to do that. Thanks again. ScottS
SpikeRoberts
ScottS,I found the part about trecking into the backwoods in search of the bulls quite intriguing. I've had my eye on a couple of 6-8 acre lakes/ponds way back in the woods near our property, but I was thinking that they've probably all suffered from winterkill. My question is this, is there any way to tell if a lake has suffered from winterkill without going through the trouble of hauling the canoe back there? SpikeRoberts
There is a really interesting article in this month's DNR Conservation Volunteer on "The Cult of the Bluegills." Guest
First,I would check the DNR web site to see if they have a report on the lake/pond. Second, I would inquire as to what the depth of it is and if it is spring fed. There is always a local that knows the history of every pond/lake. If it is spring fed I would bet that it never "completely" winter kills. Now, if it has fish in it is another thing. Odds are if it does, someone knows about it. If they were stocked there, the DNR should know about it and there "should" be some type of public access. The access may just be the fact that there is state forest all around the entire pond. So, access doesn't always mean boat access. If you have a question about it, check it out now. This is the time to do it. The fish are in the shallows (if they are there) and the bugs aren't bad yet. Good luck exploring. And, if you find fish, just tell me!! ScottS
Guest
I was just curious if this is the same Scott S that I met on one of my adventures to find one-pound Bulls. To help refresh your memory you were with one of your buddies early this winter up around the Hackensack area. You had a YAD rod broke off on the end! The fish of course were not biting. Just wondering if you are the same Scott S. Thanks!!!! P.S. Small world.
Guest
I know of a lake that fits that description perfect. We have caught numerous bulls that weighed pound or more in that lake. Not to mention a Pumpkinseed that was 2 ounces away from the state record which is 1 pound 6 ounces. If you do find a lake like this can be the best fishing of your life. And th dnr does not list it so I do not know if it is a real lake.
