Multi-Species from the Yak

Recommended Posts

Looks like a good day man! Glad to see your putting that thing to work.

I'm already thinking about upgrading the yak again. Might go the Hobie route, but we'll see. I want something a bit easier to stand up in. I gave it a few tries last week, but not too comfortable with it. Some day, Minnesota will catch on to the kayak fishing trend that seems to be gaining momentum elsewhere in the country. I need a place to test float some kayaks around here!

Another upgrade? Your crazy ted! ha. I like the idea of Hobie's but I've heard they are very hard to maneuver and heavy and for some reason that turns me off of them. But I've never tried one. I do kind of like the looks I get when I'm out there catching fish next to a bass boat or something. And the looks and questions I get at launches, I kind of like it being relatively unheard of around here but more stores carrying them and being able to test float them would be awesome!

I figured I had to get out, it's been like a month and a half I'm sad to say since I've been out. And that outing was a skunking with a 2nd degree sunburn haha. I've been getting out a lot on boats this year so the kayak gathered some dust. There is nothing like catching a fish from the kayak though, I love it!

I've yet to try standing up, I feel like I wouldn't feel too stable unless I practiced a lot. I'd want to have all my poles and gear on dry land when I tried it the first couple of times too! laugh

Oh yeah, absolutely you would want the equipment on dry land. If it was a 15' trident, I'd maybe think differently about standing up, but 11' just doesn't offer enough stability to do that.

Some day, maybe Austin Kayak will open up a store up here. We're the land of 10,000 lakes for crying out loud! There has to be a relatively large group that would be interested.

Yeah, to be honest in the last 3 years I've seen many more kayaks on waters. But it seems that most people aren't fishing out of them. Although in the last year I have seen Hobie commercials, magazine articles, and kiosks at malls with Hobie's set up so maybe we are seeing that change! I have only seen one other fishing kayak so far this year though! We gotta get out sometime, weekends in the summer are so busy for me, including this weekend. But in the fall I'm planning on getting out a lot. I'd like to try to catch my PB Northern (only has to be bigger than 6.5 pounds so pretty do-able), first Musky ever, and my first Walleye from a kayak this fall.

Enjoy watching the videos! My wife and I each have a Malibu Mini-X and get out fishing alot up here in Crow Wing Cty for multi-species too. Was curious about the hardware mounting of your camera and how you have it setup? How do you have it mounted and what kind of video camera you use? thanks.

Well I mounted a scotty adapter to my milkcrate. Then put a piece of PVC in it and made my own mount out of a PVC end cap and a 1/4" bolt. Then I just screw on my camera (Kodak Playsport Zx3) when I head out. Here's a video of my kayak you can see my homemade mount extending up on the right side of my milk crate. If you don't like any rap music, mute the volume. Ha.

Impressive! Can't believe it took me all summer to find you guys. Kayak looks great! That Trident 11 should be pretty decent to stand up in. The only stuff I don't cast standing from my T13 are the heavy musky baits. They're remarkably stable.

Two quick questions on MN Basser's yak.

First, what anchor set up did you get there? Was that off ACK or somewhere else? Since you fish similar Minnesota lakes your input would be great.

Also, how's that Zx3 for battery life? I'm considering that here pretty soon.

Let me know if you're ever up in the Duluth area. It'd be fun to get a big group outing of everybody this fall somewhere in the cities or something.

I actually made that anchor trolley myself. I ordered the parts off various websites and stores. Two of the nylon clamps have broken now so I need to find some better ones. And to be honest, I haven't really used it at all.

The playsport battery is OK. I bought a newer faster SD card which actually helps with battery life. It'll last for about an hour and half on the quality I have it set on. I bought a second battery cheap online so when the first goes out, I pop the second in and I'm good to go. The second battery was about $10.

    • It’s done automatically.  You might need an actual person to clear that log in stuff up.   Trash your laptop history if you haven’t tried that already.
    • 😂 yea pretty amazing how b o o b i e s gets flagged, but they can't respond or tell me why I  can't get logged in here on my laptop but I can on my cellular  😪
    • I grilled some brats yesterday, maybe next weekend will the next round...
    • You got word censored cuz you said        B o o b ies….. haha.   Yeah, no… grilling is on hiatus for a bit.
    • Chicken mine,  melded in Mccormick poultry seasoning for 24 hours.  Grill will get a break till the frigid temps go away!
    • we had some nice weather yesterday and this conundrum was driving me crazy  so I drove up to the house to take another look. I got a bunch of goodies via ups yesterday (cables,  winch ratchet parts, handles, leaf springs etc).   I wanted to make sure the new leaf springs I got fit. I got everything laid out and ready to go. Will be busy this weekend with kids stuff and too cold to fish anyway, but I will try to get back up there again next weekend and get it done. I don't think it will be bad once I get it lifted up.    For anyone in the google verse, the leaf springs are 4 leafs and measure 25 1/4" eye  to eye per Yetti. I didnt want to pay their markup so just got something else comparable rated for the same weight.   I am a first time wheel house owner, this is all new to me. My house didn't come with any handles for the rear cables? I was told this week by someone in the industry that cordless drills do not have enough brake to lower it slow enough and it can damage the cables and the ratchets in the winches.  I put on a handle last night and it is 100% better than using a drill, unfortatenly I found out the hard way lol and will only use the ICNutz to raise the house now.
    • I haven’t done any leaf springs for a long time and I can’t completely see the connections in your pics BUT I I’d be rounding up: PB Blaster, torch, 3 lb hammer, chisel, cut off tool, breaker bar, Jack stands or blocks.   This kind of stuff usually isn’t the easiest.   I would think you would be able to get at what you need by keeping the house up with Jack stands and getting the pressure off that suspension, then attack the hardware.  But again, I don’t feel like I can see everything going on there.
    • reviving an old thread due to running into the same issue with the same year of house. not expecting anything from yetti and I already have replacement parts ordered and on the way.   I am looking for some input or feedback on how to replace the leaf springs themselves.    If I jack the house up and remove the tire, is it possible to pivot the axel assembly low enough to get to the other end of the leaf spring and remove that one bolt?   Or do I have to remove the entire pivot arm to get to it? Then I also have to factor in brake wire as well then. What a mess   My house is currently an hour away from my home at a relatives, going to go back up and look it over again and try to figure out a game plan.           Above pic is with house lowered on ice, the other end of that leaf is what I need to get to.   above pic is side that middle bolt broke and bottom 2 leafs fell out here is other side that didnt break but you can see bottom half of leaf already did but atleast bolt is still in there here is hub assembly in my garage with house lowered and tires off when I put new tires on it a couple months ago. hopefully I can raise house high enough that it can drop down far enough and not snap brake cable there so I can get to that other end of the leaf spring.
