New Hummingbird ?? help with terminology

TNFL

Question

Can someone explain the difference between this:

GPS chartplotting with built-in ContourXD mapping (788ci)

and this:

GPS chartplotting with built-in UniMap (597ci)

I have a navionics chip already that I use in a Low. XOG, and ethernet isn't a priority for me, but the difference in price between those two is $150.

Thanks,

Adam

The ContourXD has the contours of approximatly 3000 lakes across the country and outlines of others.

Unimap is just a basic map with outlines of the "bigger" lakes, and no great detail.

Both have major roads also I believe.

Neither will replace the amount of information on the Navionics or Lakemaster chips though.

What is chart plotting?

It doesn't actually chart depths as you float around a lake does it. I've noticed navionics coordinates are a bit off on lakes that aren't high def.

Or is chart plotting just the ability to trace your paths and mark way points, without automatically "redrawing" the maps depth contours.

Thanks, that's what I thought.

So, my Xog with a navionics chip has "chart plotting"

Adam

The way that "chart plotting" is being used here, yes. One thing that a 788-series 'Bird unit with a LakeMaster chip can do is off-set depths. If the water is higher or lower than what the chart reads, you can correct the chart on the fly. You can also highlight targeted depths and shallow water. I think that those are both worth the extra money.

You might know this already, but the chip in your Xog won't work in a 'Bird unit.

I thought the navionics were universal. But the lakemaster were brand specific. I'd have to pull the card out and look at it.
