Dickcissel

On my morning bike ride I've been entertained by three male dickcissel's in a four mile stretch. They seem to be guarding nests but I never see the females and a couple of times I've gone out in the afternoon looking for nests and so far have come up empty. Checking out several bird sites I found the male will mate with up to six females a season, although it usually ends up about one to three females. The males guarding song is neat to hear and on the bike I can get within ten feet of one who uses a road sign as his perch. Beautiful birds.

Great pic and info micpic. A guy can always dream of being a male dickcissel. grin One of my favorite little songbirds as a kid growing up on the farm and still one of my favorite summer inhabitants at the ranch.
