Snap Weights and Cranks

Recommended Posts

I have line counters and the trolling bible book, which I have used often this year. However, now that I'm finding walleyes deeper as the summer heat progresses, I'm wondering if someone could post some tips on using snaps weights to get cranks down to that 20-30 ft range. I know that even shallow running baits can be used with this technique. How do you know how much line to let out and when you're running right off bottom? Thanks.

B-mac, I dont think this is the answer your looking for but here's what I do. This is not actual fishing , more like familiarization and getting to know your baits. I usually "test" my baits useing the 50/50 method. For example, run 75' of line out then add the snap weight then 75' of line again, total line out 150'. I use different depths, usually flats to troll along and find the depth the baits are running, usually you can feel the bait or weight hit bottom. On a 30' flat for example I would test different weight, lures, line out, speed, location of weight on line, etc. This by no means is 100% acurate, but it can give you confidence and put you in the ball park. Add 1 1/2 oz weight and pull up weeds then try 1 oz till you find the right combo. I always put a snap swivel on the clip. Clip the weight on the line and open the swivel and insert line, when you get a fish reel to the weight unclip and it will slide down the line to the bait. Keep a big fish's head down, the weight can sometimes help to throw the hook. This keeps from loseing weights by attaching to the line. Good luck. can it be luck?
