which sonar unit to get?

Recommended Posts

I just finalized the purchase of my first fishing boat. i am just a beginner and would really like to rig the boat to give me a good chance at catching some walleyes. I will fish mostly mille lacs and the metro lakes as well. the boat is a lund fisherman 1700 with a 140hp suzuki 4stroke. What else should I consider getting? a trolling motor or will this engine troll down slow enough? which sonar unit? I am looking at the pinpoint 7520 or lowrance X15. I already have a handheld gps with mapping so thats not important. Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Also who do you guys suggest as a place I can have my boat rigged up with this equipment?

Take a look at Vexilar Edge2 if you want to catch fish.

If you dont need GPS capabilities then the x85 is the best option you will find...and I have seen the competition. It is the best sonar only unit I have seen and I am not the only one with this opinion. I guess I am not familiar with how the four stroke motors troll down but my 125 merc two stroke slows to a little under 2 in calm with the same boat you have. If i need anything slower the 65lb autopilot does the trick. I would strongly suggest looking into an autopilot as well, they are priceless

The X-85 is no longer in production. I saw the Vexilar Edge2 ran side by side next to an LMS-240 last year on the rocks on Mille Lacs. With it's dual transducer concept, it was marking fish that the LMS-240 could not. I saw fish and bottom transition that normally my old X-85 could not. The X-15 just has a bigger screen with more pixels which gives you better detail but still hides fish in certain situations.

Nice choice on boats, I have a 1800 Fisherman with a 115 merc 4stroke. Your 140 will not troll down enough unless you put a trolling plate on it, so your better off getting a bow mount trolling motor. Make sure you get one with a 60inch shaft, mine is only 54 and its a little to short,I have to put it all the way down which makes it hard on the steering because of the cables getting jammed and the prop will come out of the water when there's a chop. For a sonar, I got a hummingbird legend 3000, it picks up fish down to 2 inches off the bottom, I now the lowrances only pick them up down to 6 inches, also not a lot of buttons which makes it easy to use, it also has a built in flasher, I like it very much. I will eventually put a vexilar fl18 on the trolling motor for the front of the boat. Also with your 140 you won't be able to backtroll slow enough so you might want to consider a trolling motor for the back of your boat instead, if you backtroll more thant you forward troll. Well, thats all I have for you, enjoy your new boat. One more thing, when its windy these boats become hard to control with its high sides, make sure you keep the big motor all the way (straight)in the water when ever you troll otherwise you will sway from side to side.

I would stay away from pinpoint they are realy good when they work but in the last year I know 3 peaple that have had theres die on them and it is almost imposible to find someone to fix them and 2 of the 3 had them less then a year.
But the x15 is a real good unit I have had one for the last year and realy like it.
