MN and the Lead License

I do construction and have heard many different things on when the state is really going to crack down on it. Also, I heard that by the end of the year every contractor is required to have a lead license? Why is it just carpenters being picked on?? Electricians work in lead enviornment's all the time on these older homes. Its a joke if you ask me...

Electricians usually aren't tearing out lead painted walls, cabinets and siding. Its not just MN picking on the contractors, its the EPA and DOH who changed the rules on how lead is removed and disposed of to protect the health of workers and others in the area and protect the environment. Its a way for them to control who is working with lead. I doubt they are requiring contractors who only work on new construction to get licensed.

Griz, it's not just for carpenters. Granted, they are most affected by this but any sub who needs to bust open a wall needs to be certified. Plumbers, fitters, tinners, electricians. We all need to. Not a bad thing, just a part of doing business. Guess I'd rather have the rules a bit tougher than not tough enough. Who knows, it just might be your kid that gets affected by this.

If your dealing with removing 6 square feet or more you need the lead abatement for houses dated 1975-76 and older. The state did enforce this for a few weeks in March and changed enforcement to August of this year.... No permits for work will be issued unless proof of certification is given....Homeowners are excempt, have them pull permits

I got lead certified last year and there was a lot of jokes and laughing about the "law" in the classroom.

I charge insurance companies $420 to test for lead on all homes 1978 and older. They pay it...

As a roofing contractor it's rare to run into much lead on the roof but when replacing fascia boards or some drip edge we run into lead paint.

Homeowners can do lead removal without any certification.
