Anyone fished Ochos Rios, Jamaica

We honeymooned at Sandals in Ocho Rios....had a deep sea fishing trip booked...but it was cancelled last minute due to rough seas. I was bummed out for about 10 minutes until I had 3 more Red Stripes.

There was always guys in big canoe like boats that would park on the beach in the mornings who offered to take people fishing...they always seemed a bit sketchy to me....going out on the ocean with a local in a canoe....i'm sure it would have been fine, but we skipped that to book the deep sea.

I just realized I am giving you nothing of value....Have fun!

Haha, no worries. Sandals is where we'll be staying as well. I might give the canoe guys a shot. I'm all about quantity of fish over size, especially with the misses. After several wrist surgeries, she gets worn out reeling in a 5lb bass. She wouldn't last 5 minutes hooked up with a big marlin, although, that means I'd get to take over smile. I'll probably end up doing both deep sea and a smaller fish type trip. Did you book your deep sea through Sandals?

I was just down there in March. We stayed at Tower Isle in Ocho and went fishing with a charter that you can find under resortdivers, if you do a search.

We had two groups in two boats and went for 4 hours. Each group hooked into one Mahi Mahi, but didn't land any. The guys on the boat were good, but it wasn't real sophisticated persay. You basically set up 6 rods and go cruise around to see if you can find anything. I didn't see much for sonar or GPS.

If fishing was a primary concern, I would go elsewhere. If you just want to head out for a day on your vacation it was fine. If you go with a charter bring cash to pay for it.

The trip we booked was all set up through Sandals...I can't remember the name of the charter company...we basically told the front desk/consierge that we wanted to do it, and they set it all up. If I remember right, it was a couple hundred bucks per person...although my memory isn't what it once was.

I hate to bring the bad news, but you are not going to get the best fishing there. I have been to Jamaica twice, fishing once. We didn’t get much the time I went and neither time there did I talk to anyone who caught much, and I talked to a lot of people. I have fished there, Aruba, and a few times on the west side of Mexico. Mexico by far being the best. Could be different though because we always go in January. If you do go good luck.

We have been to Ochos Rios a few times. I would not pay to go out on one of the big guide boats, unless you want to drink. We have went out on the little local boats (they don't look like much). You have a much better chance of catching something. You probably won't catch much, but it is incredible. We usually see many fish, flying fish, sea turtles. We usually negotiate for about $50 for a couple of us, a six pack and bait. Well worth the time and money.

We felt safe. Was a litle spooky when we rode with them inland on the boat to get bait and beer, but remember, you are their advertisement for more people tp go out with them. They are going up and down to the resorts asking to get people out. We always stay at Sandals and they are there every day.
