This area is known more for winter birding because of the owls. The owls are still here but they are harder to find now. If you are going to be in the area I would recommend swinging down through there but if your driving here just for a day trip I probably wouldn't do it. You can find the same stuff near Bemidji. Right now I am seeing the usually migrants this time of year, various hawks, sparrows, some water fowl and shore birds. There is always the chance of seeing a moose, wolf, coyote, fox, bear, otter or bobcat but that would be a special event. The bog is one of those places where you can always find something to shoot but it may just be a song sparrow or something like that.

I like to look on Hwy 7, S. Admiral Rd, McDavitt Rd, Stone Lake Rd and Arkola Rd.

I guess posting the links that i did was the wrong thing to do but if you do a search on sax zim bog maps you will find some good maps with locations for certain birds. In addition to what Jay mentioned there are some sandhill cranes around but you probably see plenty in the Bemidji area.
