Tiller as kicker

GrizzlyAdams

Question

I have a 15hp Johnson sea horse motor (early 1980's model) that I would like to use on my bigger boat for trolling. It is a tiller motor. My question is... Can this tiller motor be hooked up to the steering wheel and can I get a throttle lever for up at the steering wheel as well to control the speed. The Johnson motor is for my smaller boat that I will use very little but would like to use if needed for smaller lakes that I can't get the bigger boat in. If this is possible I would like to use the smaller motor more for trolling with the bigger boat. I plan on eventually adding a trolling motor on the bow in the future but money is not readily flowing my way so I am trying to figure out what I can do with what little money I do have to spend on this situation.

I guess I would prefer not to sit in the back of the boat when trolling with this motor if possible.

Thank you for any and all advice. It is greatly appreciated.

Your local dealer should be able to fix you up with what you need. Otherwise Twin City Outboard in Shakopee. Or take a bunch of photos of your stuff and head to a boat salvage yard. The guys there maybe able to help you out.

Short answer is..........yes you can hook it up.

How set are you on having two boats? My guess is you could sell the smaller boat and motor, and put in the cash that you would've spent on the conversion, and buy a nice troller for your bigger boat.

Also, how much of a pain will it be to swap the small tiller between boats? (Which is what I think you want to do.) I don't have any idea, but it's something to think about before you commit.
