painting sonars need advice

Recommended Posts

I make my own sonars and I try to use powder paint. It works OK but would like input on a better way. I'm thinking about going with an airbrush but not sure about the brass blanks used in the molds. Do I need a special primer for brass and/or lead. Any input would be greatly appreciated.

I'd clean the sonars then use steel wool and clean again.

Use a self etching primer, let dry then a white base coat if your paint will be bright colors..

Air brush with a latex gloss. Finish coat in clear lacquer to make the colors pop and protect the paint.

You might want to leave some of the brass bright on the sonars with paint over it in a translucent effect.

While I'm able to do this in latex, having no bite, the paint is just sitting on the surface. Clear lacquer again will make the finish pop and make a wrapper if you will to the lure. When you get better with the air brush then go with lacquer paint + clear coat.

Or clean scuff and prime just the area you plan to paint and finish with clear lacquer.

For lead jigs just dip in white latex, let dry then dip in your gloss color.
