Powder
I'm looking at purchasing a boat that has a Yamaha VMAX HPDI (High Pressure Direct Injection) and I was wondering if anyone has had any experience with them? Are these good or bad motors?
morepower02
They are a good motor. The fuel system is a little tricky. It uses 2 lift pumps to supply the VST medium pressure pump that supplies the high pressure direct injection pump. I have had to replace a number of power heads do to one lift pump going down or a plugged VST filter or the filter between the VST and the high pressure pump getting plugged. Keeping all of the fuel filters fresh is key, also spendy. The primary filter, the filter in the VST and the filter between the VST and high pressure pump should be replaced every couple of seasons. rwk
I just put a 2006 200hp hpdi vmax on the back of my older bass boat and it is great. The motor is quiet and very quick to me it was well worth it.
Powder
Thanks for the replys.Chris,The motor I'm looking at is, I believe, about 10 years old. Would that concern you? I don't think it's been used a lot.
Matt C
I run a 2009 200 HPDI on the back of my Alumacraft Trophy 195. WOW is all I can say. Killer motor.I Had an 08 150 Yami 4-stroke on my previous 08 trophy 185, loved it, very quite, but not even CLOSE to the power I get outta the 200 HPDI.People say "man that's a quite motor!" For a 2 stroke...yes it is.-It doesn't eat oil. (I ONLY use AMSOIL btw). -It does NOT stink as bad like other 2-strokes.-Gas mileage is not as good as a 4-stroke, but it aint bad for the size of the motor...you do pay to play.-Big water? Bring IT! Plenty of power to get you through, up over and beyond.-Quick easy maintenance, should you need any. ( Have not needed anything)-Weight vs. 4-stroke saves you a hundo.-Price vs. 4-stroke saves ya a grand or so +.2 years in, I am VERY impressed. wormdunker
I own a 2002 200 hp Vmax Hpdi. I cant even tell you how happy I am with the motor. It is not the fastest motor due to block size but it is as reliable a motor as you will ever own. It is quiet, efficient on oil and gas. Minimal smoke. Good luck. morepower02
Age is not a concern. I would do a compression test before you buy it. If that's good and you buy it then change all of the filters. Also the water pump impeller and you will have a great engine.
