new fox/cayote hunter help and tips

Recommended Posts

okay i have a 308 encore handgun im pretty sure it can and will reach out to 300 yards. the thing is, how would one get started with fox and cayote hunting? calls and gear besides clothing. how to scout areas for fox/cayotes. if theres no season for yotes does that mean all year hunting?

what do you do with a dead fox/yote? field dressing them? how to call them in?

is there even any foxes and cayotes around the north metro? were do i have to go and what types of forest do i look for? what types of biomes would they be in?

planin to take up hunting foxes and yotes soon within this year or wait til next year

Like stated on here before, the best thing to do is buy a few dvds. That way you will see the sounds and setups that work for them. You can hunt them whenever during the year, with some stipulations around deer hunting. Look into local laws. There are coyotes all over the state including the north metro. If you get one ask around for the local fur collector in your area, you will get a few bucks. My advice would be keep the wind either in your face or have a cross wind. The biggest thing is keep trying until you get one. Good luck

Handgunner,

All you'll really need is your gun and a mouth call. Watch a few DVD's or catch a few demonstrations on the internet would be the easiest way to really see how to start calling and you can modify that to the way you want.

The best way to scout is to start driving around now when there's still snow on the ground and look for tracks crossing roads. Right now they are very active during the breeding season. The best places I've found are more open areas like farm fields and pastures, not forested areas. They're definitely there but since I hunt mostly with rifle I tend to spend most of my time in the open.

As far as what to do with them. You can sell them in the round, which is unskun but preferably frozen or case skun. Coyotes tend to get green belly real fast even in cold weather so it's best to skin them out if the fur looks good enough to keep. If they have mange I'll just drag them into the brush and leave them.

Go out and give it a shot and let us know how you do.

Rob

i see...

the WMA lands in the north metro i go around are around the carlos avery area around bethel, isanti, those places. i hear yotes once when i went to carlos for the first time they seemed very far away but u can defenatley hear them, maybe they are not so far away?

anyhoo the WMA land has scattered forest plots followed by swampy areas that the farest seems to scatter around and some spots would be open grassy spots.

not much time left. maybe just go out with the gun and walk around? call a little wait and listen? maybe ill get lucky?

are yotes anywere or is there key places they are?

    • got this tackled today took about 3 hours to get both sides done. Didnt even get to use a torch....   Thought I was golden with just jacking it up and I could get to everything but no luck. Had to remove the entire axle hub and brake assembly to get to what I needed. Was a pain but still better then taking off the entire pivot arm.    Axle bearings were already greased and in great shape thankfully. Got both leaf springs installed and its ready for the road again.   Probably going to have my electric brakes checked, I am not touching anything with the brake drums. Based on what I saw it doesn't look like my electric brakes have been working anyway. Brakes are nice to have if its slippery out
    • By The way that didn't work either!! Screw it I'll just use the cellular.
    • It’s done automatically.  You might need an actual person to clear that log in stuff up.   Trash your laptop history if you haven’t tried that already.
    • 😂 yea pretty amazing how b o o b i e s gets flagged, but they can't respond or tell me why I  can't get logged in here on my laptop but I can on my cellular  😪
    • I grilled some brats yesterday, maybe next weekend will the next round...
    • You got word censored cuz you said        B o o b ies….. haha.   Yeah, no… grilling is on hiatus for a bit.
    • Chicken mine,  melded in Mccormick poultry seasoning for 24 hours.  Grill will get a break till the frigid temps go away!
    • we had some nice weather yesterday and this conundrum was driving me crazy  so I drove up to the house to take another look. I got a bunch of goodies via ups yesterday (cables,  winch ratchet parts, handles, leaf springs etc).   I wanted to make sure the new leaf springs I got fit. I got everything laid out and ready to go. Will be busy this weekend with kids stuff and too cold to fish anyway, but I will try to get back up there again next weekend and get it done. I don't think it will be bad once I get it lifted up.    For anyone in the google verse, the leaf springs are 4 leafs and measure 25 1/4" eye  to eye per Yetti. I didnt want to pay their markup so just got something else comparable rated for the same weight.   I am a first time wheel house owner, this is all new to me. My house didn't come with any handles for the rear cables? I was told this week by someone in the industry that cordless drills do not have enough brake to lower it slow enough and it can damage the cables and the ratchets in the winches.  I put on a handle last night and it is 100% better than using a drill, unfortatenly I found out the hard way lol and will only use the ICNutz to raise the house now.
