Varied thrush

Hey all:

Ken and I spent some time today lurking around a feeding station in Ely hoping that the male varied thrush that's been hanging around this winter would show up.

It did.

A western species, it's become a pretty regular winter visitor to the Midwest.

Not a compelling photograph per se, simply documenting that the species was here. This is a crop, with only about 20 percent of the original image remaining. We stood well off so as not to spook the bird. This was shot with a Canon 1D3, Canon 600mm f4L IS and Canon 1.4 TC.

Hey SanJoaquin, welcome to HSO. Great to have you here.

This 600 is a loan from Canon Professional Services. I borrow the biggest glass from CPS when I need it for certain projects. My largest lens is 400mm, though I commonly put a 1.4 TC behind it. smile

The 600 is a crackerjack lens. I definitely love the power and sharpness it produces, and it's great for those situations where even expert woodscraft isn't quite enough to get you close enough for 400mm. Now that Canon has produced the new line of Mark 2 superteles, it's even possible I'll be able to afford to buy a used 600 Mk 1 down the road. smile
