But now there's a hotter one......the Trinidad Scorpion Butch T.The Butch T. outdistances the Naga Viper, barely, on the Scoville scale -- which rates spice power by tracking the presence of a chemical compound in chilis. The Australian Butch T. weighs in at 1.46 million heat units on the scale, while the British Naga Viper tops out at 1.38 million.The Bhut Jolikia has dropped to number 4. I personally don't count them, since they are hybrids derived either as "Eager Beaver" peppers or marketing ploys to draw more money from "Pepper Heads."Instead I tend to think of it as "Bhut Jolokia is the hottest NATURALLY occurring pepper in the world."
