This is exactly what im good at. The crappies especially so ill talk about those fish. First off, crappie during mid winter like to roam the main basin in a lake. Im assuming you fish in a lake? If you can find a map of your lake and circle an area on there where there is rock/weeds/sand and then locate the main basin. Once you have located both areas, simply draw a line between the two. Throughout winter you will find fish anywhere throughout that line. In the spring, crappies and sunnies will spawn in weeds/rock/or sandy areas. Here on Pool8, early june i will find limits of huge crappies easily on rock piles. That may or may not be the same on certain lakes? Reasons for crappies to spawn later or earlier are dependant on certain things:weather conditions, watercolor, and surface temperature. Generally speaking, crappie prefer the temperature range of 62 to 66 degrees for active spawning but there are times when a later spawn might occur due to drastic weather changes. Many times crappies will be geting ready to spawn but a cold front will push through. This will hold up spawing times.

In many northern lakes black crappie spawn in cooler temperatures and clear water while white crappie in the south and Midwest often choose warm conditions and darker more dirty water because of the influence from rivers. Drastic changes in lake levels can often throw the fish off their routine too.
