lake frontenac

Hello,

Has anyone fished Frontenac lake before? It's located right behind the Marathon gas station. I initially thought it was attached to Pepin but it's not. DNR says its only 5 feet deep. There must be something going on because there was about 10 perms on that little lake.

My girlfriend went to college in Winona so I would make that drive down HWY 61 quite often, and in the winter months I always marveled at the size of that town and how many permies were on that lake! I figured they were catching some fish but also that it was just tradition and the thing to do there. Only 5 feet deep, I wouldn't have guessed that!

Sorry but I kinda had a little chuckle when you called it Lake Frontenac. Us locals call it the pond because it real name "Pleasant Valley Watershed" just is too long to say, and just sounds to sexy for a pond.

There is fish in there but it isn't stocked. In the spring when it floods a few shallow water fish find their way there from the river. Fish include, gills, perch, northern, bullhead, carp and occasional crappie. There is one hole in there that is 8 feet deep but 95% of the pond is only 5 feet.

I too have one of those permanents you see from the road. But like 90% of the shacks I didn't want to loose heat by putting holes in a insulated floor for what was below the ice. Have you ever seen the movie grumpy old men, that's basically the best way to describe the shacks but without the fishing? Mini town on the ice is the place to spend the weekends many beers and cheers, but not over the fishing.
