Quad vs Mega cab Dodge?

Recommended Posts

I am in the market for a newer used truck. I have had my eye on the dodge's cause I really like the Cummins engine. Question is we want a Crew cab and since we are looking for a 2007 to 2009 truck They only offer a Quad and Mega. The Quad seems a little cramped and the Mega seems almost too big. What to do? Those that have the quad is it big enough to sit a couple adults for when we take friends along?

I think the quad has adequate size, especially if you just have a couple adults back there. I have an 03 and never have any complaints when I have 4 people in the truck. Even the wifes do fine back there on trips up north with other couples. Not sure if the 2009's have the newer interior or not, but we drove 5 guys in my father in laws 2010 quad to Colorado last year and while it was a little cramped, it was manageable. It would have been comfortable with just 4 guys. I don't see a need for the mega, but it would be nice for passengers....but definitely not needed to be comfortable.

mega! I had a 06 3500 and could lay on the sleep on the back floor and not touch the seats. I should mention I am 330lbs. I love all of the room in the back being a mechanic I have lots of tools and rain gear in my truck. I traded it in last year just because I wanted a new one and needed new tires grin

I also got 26000 for it on a 09 2500 crew cab.

My legs do get cramped in the back for 3 or more hours of driving so I just drive most of the time.

I also know for some reason Dodge put a diffrent gas filler neck. On mega cabs the gas spills out when you leave the nozzle locked unatended. Not that big of deal but it always made me mad.

Good luck and happy shopping.

I would say Mega all the way. I love mione and I won't go back unless it's the new crew cab.

You have partially reclining seats, rear seat storage bins which eliminates the need for a toobox. Back seats fold down to create a huge load area and the doors open 90deg. My wife fit a dining room with 4 chairs and a table in the back seats. I can lay down, lower the DVD player and watch a movie while the driver (whoever wants to be) takes me around.

Quad cab is ok for smaller people or very short distance, I had 2 3rd gen quad cabs and they are ok, but when I tried the Mega......

Also Mega retains value like nothing else, I have people asking me to sell mine at same price I paid for 2 years ago with 58,000 miles less.

The only disadvantage you might encounter is the bed length if you haul a lot.

to me the only differance is the storage space behind the seat. Maybe there is a bit more leg room but I don't think so.

Huh ? The Megacab truck is the largest cab ever built. Nobody can beat it, if 3 ft of leg room is not enough, you will have to get a bus, and drive from the 3rd row of seats.

I have an 05 Quad (Cummins) and before that an 02 Quad(gas). In both cases, I have had 4 adults (and in one case 4 adults and 2 dogs) for the trip to Canada duck hunting. I have ridden in the back seats for over 300 miles at a time, and while likely not as comfortable as a Mega cab, it was not uncomfortable. I was 6' and 265 back then. I say buy the quad. Get the Cummins, you won't regret it! I have 150K + miles on mine, and have yet to do anything to the engine, other than that pesky #4 fuel line, which was about $75.00.

Hope this helps.

I am on my third Quad cab ram since (03,06,10) The mega cab is nice but I fell it was not needed since I will be in the driver seat most of the time but we did ride 4 adults on a longer trip when I got my 10 and no one complained 09 has a crew cab 1500 but the bed will be 5ft 7" where the quad cab gives you a 6ft 4" bed I liked the size of the 1500 crew but didn't want to go with the shorter bed

    • Truly sorry to hear that duffman! I know that feeling.  Keep the good memories
    • Chamois passed away this weekend a couple days short of her 13th bday. What a great dog to hang out with here at home and on distant adventures. Gonna miss ya big time my little big girl.
    • Sounds pretty sweet, alright. I will check them out, thanks.
    • If you really want to treat your wife (and yourself) with a remote operated trolling motor, the Minn Kota Ulterra is about easy as it gets.  Auto stow and deploy is pretty awesome.  You just have to turn the motor on when you go out and that the last time you have to touch it.   24V 80lb.  60 inch shaft is probably the right length for your boat.  They ain’t cheap - about $3k - but neither one of you would have to leave your seat to use it all day.
    • Wanderer, thanks for your reply. I do intend for it to be 24 volt, with a thrust of 70-80. Spot lock is a must (my wife is looking forward to not being the anchor person any more).  With my old boat we did quite a lot of pulling shad raps and hot n tots, using the trolling motor. Unlikely that we will fish in whitecaps, did plenty of that when I was younger. I also need a wireless remote, not going back to a foot pedal. We do a fair amount of bobber fishing. I don't think I will bother with a depth finder on the trolling motor. I am leaning toward moving my Garmin depth finder from my old boat to the new one, just because I am so used to it and it works well for me. I am 70 years old and kinda set in my ways...
    • Dang, new content and now answers.   First, congrats on the new boat!   My recommendation is to get the most thrust you can in 24V, assuming a boat that size isn’t running 36V.  80 might be tops?  I’m partial to MinnKota.     How do you plan to use the trolling motor is an important question too.     All weather or just nice weather?   Casting a lot or bait dragging?   Bobber or panfish fishing?   Spot lock?  Networked with depth finders?  What brand of depth finders?
    • We have bought a new boat, which we will be picking up this spring. It is an Alumacraft Competitor 165 sport with a 90 horse Yamaha motor. I will be buying and installing a trolling motor,  wondering if I can get some recommendations on what pound thrust I will want for this boat?  Also, I will be selling my old boat, is there a good way to determine the value on an older boat ( mid-80's with a 75 horse 2-stroke  Mariner motor)  I will appreciate any help with these questions.
