Yet another transmission question

Recommended Posts

I smoked the 700r4 tranny in my truck not too long ago. 89 chev, 5.7, 4wd, 1/2 ton.

I've been looking for one and not having the best luck finding one fairly local. I've been able to find a few from 90 sububarns. I know the 700r4's have evolved over the years with numerous improvements. My question is will a 700r4 from a 90 suburban 4x4 bolt into my 89 truck?

Anyone know??

Not trying to be too annoying, but here's another question. And, I should add I'm only asking this after doing some reading on the internet aboot these transmissions.

I only have first gear and reverse. If I put in drive it will not shift out of first at any RPM. Dry road or slippery doesn't matter. There is no vacuum modulator. I don't see anything ripped off this trans.

After reading up a bit I'm learning the governor controls quite a bit, and they have a habit of shearing their gear. Since I have the truck in the garage thawing out will all intentions of swapping a tranny out tomorrow I'm thinking about pulling the governor first and seeing if there is any noticable damage to it before I yank out an entire trans. Have any of yous guys swapped out a governor on a 700r4? If so, what should I be looking for when I remove it?? I figure since if all else fails, this trans is coming out, but, if I don't have to pull the whole thing I'd rather not.

Thanks.
