Clam fan/light problems

PRO-V

Recommended Posts

Anybody had trouble with the new Clam fan/light combo with the DC cord. Got 2 in a row that would not work right with the DC cord. The second one didn't work very well even with just batteries. It is not the DC outlet I used either, tried several.

I picked up the cheaper Clam fan/light. Had to take it apart and trim all of the fan blades down so it quit making a horrific rattling noise. Eats batteries like my kids. I think they're junk. Maybe I just got a bad egg.

Mine too has a bad draw / eat the bats if you don't pop open the hatch when done using it. The light does not put out that much light, it is very bulky...worse investment I made yet I think. I purchased mine last year. I have two litle LED pucks that work very well. Mine does not have the option to plug it in.

I think I may try the computer fan idea. Seems to make more sense than trusting someone who gets paid in food to build my fan. Ax-man Surplus has a ton of computer fans. I always look at them and think what I can make with them, now I have a plan. Thanks for the insight Dairy.

Yeah, the Clam one I picked up is junk too. It's worse when using the DC cord. The lights dim when the fan is on, and sometimes the lights don't come on when the fan is running. I'm going to return it.

I also picked up one of the new Frabill LED lights- the single bulb one for $15. This light rocks! It's brighter than the clam light, works well in my 1 man sled. I wish you could run it off a flasher battery, and there is no fan, but it's a good light for the $$.

Took my second one back today and got a refund. Bought it more for the fan than the light. The RV light I made for $7 last year works better than anything out there and runs off a flasher battery. Gonna do like dairyman and mount a computer fan to it. Made a battery box out of a small lunch size cooler, drilled a hole through it and hooked up a 12volt outlet for phones, gps etc. Light hooks up with alligator clips to terminals.

Mount the light to a 3/4" board with a bracket off that for a fan mount, wire in an inline lamp switch to the fan. Got a spring loaded tool clip on the back of mine to attach to a pole or use Velcro.

Well we don't have a fan but we got lights. Very bright, low power consuming FireBright LEDs. The computer fan sounds like an awesome idea, but how do you guys mount them?

How many flextube strips and what length would I want for a fishtrap pro? I want the option of it being REALLY bright.

Well if im thinking of the right fish trap (one man) you would be fine with one 38 inch flextube LED but if you want it really bright get a 38 inch and a 19 inch. Put the 19 inch on the back horizontial bar and the 38 inch on the front bar.

Glad to see I'm not the only one who realized quickly that these things are junk.

The switches are terrible and crappy...mine only worked on low at first.

Mine makes a horrible whining noise.

The fan blades chatter against the guard.

The light dims when turn the fan on.

It feels cheap to the touch.

This product is absolutely terrible and Clam should be ashamed to have their name associated with this China junk.

It is a great idea and with better engineering and craftsmanship could be fantastic product. Unfortunately they built it as cheaply as they possibly could and it's painfully obvious.

AVOID THIS PRODUCT!

    • Sounds pretty sweet, alright. I will check them out, thanks.
    • If you really want to treat your wife (and yourself) with a remote operated trolling motor, the Minn Kota Ulterra is about easy as it gets.  Auto stow and deploy is pretty awesome.  You just have to turn the motor on when you go out and that the last time you have to touch it.   24V 80lb.  60 inch shaft is probably the right length for your boat.  They ain’t cheap - about $3k - but neither one of you would have to leave your seat to use it all day.
    • Wanderer, thanks for your reply. I do intend for it to be 24 volt, with a thrust of 70-80. Spot lock is a must (my wife is looking forward to not being the anchor person any more).  With my old boat we did quite a lot of pulling shad raps and hot n tots, using the trolling motor. Unlikely that we will fish in whitecaps, did plenty of that when I was younger. I also need a wireless remote, not going back to a foot pedal. We do a fair amount of bobber fishing. I don't think I will bother with a depth finder on the trolling motor. I am leaning toward moving my Garmin depth finder from my old boat to the new one, just because I am so used to it and it works well for me. I am 70 years old and kinda set in my ways...
    • Dang, new content and now answers.   First, congrats on the new boat!   My recommendation is to get the most thrust you can in 24V, assuming a boat that size isn’t running 36V.  80 might be tops?  I’m partial to MinnKota.     How do you plan to use the trolling motor is an important question too.     All weather or just nice weather?   Casting a lot or bait dragging?   Bobber or panfish fishing?   Spot lock?  Networked with depth finders?  What brand of depth finders?
    • We have bought a new boat, which we will be picking up this spring. It is an Alumacraft Competitor 165 sport with a 90 horse Yamaha motor. I will be buying and installing a trolling motor,  wondering if I can get some recommendations on what pound thrust I will want for this boat?  Also, I will be selling my old boat, is there a good way to determine the value on an older boat ( mid-80's with a 75 horse 2-stroke  Mariner motor)  I will appreciate any help with these questions.
    • Sketti...  not out of a jar either!
    • Lol yeah I watched that
