Computer not recognizing smartphone

So my phone was updated to Adroid 2.2 and now when I plug it into the USB port of my computer it doesn't show up as a device anymore so I can't download any songs, etc.

What should I do? Is there some sort of other procedure I'm missing?

Are you changing the option on the phone so that it appears as a "disk drive" and not "charging only"?

Didn't change anything. How do I?

When you connect it to the PC the options should pop up.

If it doesn't pop up, while it's connected to the PC, swipe down from the notification area and it should show what "mode" it's in and give you the opportunity to change it.

It does nothing except charge the phone. Under settings it looks like the SD card is mounted since the only option available is to unmount the card.

Everything worked until the upgrade from 1.6 to 2.2

Are you seeing anything in the notification bar when it's plugged in? Did you swipe down on the bar to see what it's showing?

Yes I did swipe it down and no, not seeing anything in the notification area at all.

Couple options for you to try.

First I would:

1.) Try enabling Development/USB Debugging and see if your computer recognizes your device.

Settings > Applications > Development > USB Debugging.

I am thinking this should fix it.

2.) You might try simply restarting the phone. Power it off take the battery out for 30 seconds and put it back together and turn it on.

3.) Go to your manufactures HSOforum and download the latest and most up to date software they have for syncing your phone via USB to computer that might help as well.

if all else fails.

4.) Plug it in via USB, then right-click My Computer (assuming you're using Windows), then choose Manage. In the following screen, click Device Manager to the left; at the bottom you will see Universal Serial Bus controllers, expand the list if it isn't already. Next I'd remove/uninstall any unknown devices or ones labeled mass storage device. Once you do that, perform a safe removal, disconnect the USB cable and then reconnect it so that it reinstalls the driver.
