XBox ring of death

Has anyone repaired their own? There seems to be many videos online on how to take them apart and repair them. Did it work? I dont hear the fan working on mine, does that still mean it could be a broken solder joint?

Well I took it all apart, cleaned it, puts some electrical greese on the gpu or cpu, which ever. And put it all back together and it worked, I dont know for how long though?

You need to use thermal grease not the standard silicon electrical grease.

My cousin got the red ring on his XBox also and we tried quite a few of the tricks online. First we tried to overheat it by wrapping it in a towel and turning in it on. Did not work. We then tried just applying some Arctic Silver 5 without replacing any bolts. Worked for about 15 mins then same thing. We then replaced all the bolts that hold down the motherboard, re-pasted it and tried to even add a new fan. It worked for about a hour or so. Finally he got upset, threw it against the wall and his wife went out and bought him a new one!

I think the fix that is shown online is basically just temporary. The board will eventually get warm again and warp, which in turn will move the units again. I do not think there is any fix that I have found that could make it playable for long periods of time. I think the best bet would to be to go out and buy the cheap arcade version. If you have a hard drive already, I believe you can just swap it out and put it on that one. Unless spending money is what you are trying to avoid. In that case, you can keep trying the fix and hope that it will continue to work for you. Good luck.
