used car advice

Recommended Posts

Daughter is looking at a friends original owner 2002 Chev Malibu 3.1 liter 6cyl. Only 32000 actual miles. She wouldn't get a steal on it but it's priced fair. My question is the dependability of the 3.1 Good engine? Any expected problem areas?

There is the popular intake gasket issues, fuel pumps, wheel bearings, lower control arm bushings, stabilizer bar and links, window regulators, catalytic converters and erratic anti theft activation that will keep you from starting the car are the things that come to mind right of the bat.

I know the appeal of low miles is there but low miles also equals none of the known issues have popped up yet. If you buy it knowing you'll have to spend $500 to $1000 dollars a year to keep it on the road than there shouldn't be a problem
