A sad reminder

An unfortunate boating accident claimed the life of a well known Duluth photographer yesterday. Boating in the Duluth harbor in dead calm conditions and pleasant weather, apparantly a simple fall caused the man to go overboard. The accident was witnessed from a docked vessel and the Coast Guard was on the scene within 10 minutes. But by then it was too late. Sub 50 degree water got him in a matter of minutes. No life jacket was worn. Had the life jacket been on, he most likely would have been rescued and lived.

Most of us are lax about wearing the life jacket. But when the water turns cold, it's hypothermia that kills, no matter how good a swimmer one might be. All water in Minneosta is now so cold that survival for the strongest is down to a matter of minutes. Wear the life jacket!
