On the limited lakes where I have been able to target splake,I have(like you) tried everything but have found through trial and error that if I fished them like I was targeting Lakers(trolling with a dave davis spinner set-up and a longer leader) and use smaller lures/bait the results improved.

Spring, fall, summer and winter I fish Slake the same way I would fish for Brook Trout. Crawler harness with a small blade. Panther Martins. An inflated worm casted into the correct depth or a worm drifted.
Depth/temp is really the key here.
A thermometer with 150 ft probe and a sounder is a must in my boat when going after all trout. You'll find them suspended over a thermocline in deep water many times.
In the winter I rarely fish any deeper then 8 FOW for Brookie's and Splake.
Swedish Pimple tipped with a preserved crappie minnow works.

The only way I've ever caught them was ice fishing with a slip bobber rigged with a tube jig and waxie. Funny thing is the splake do not take the bobber under, when they hit the bait they start swimming up, so if you see your bobber on it side like it's on the bottom odds are there is a splake on.

Good Luck

Matt

In the summer splake can be hard to fish. They are deeper than alot of people fish. They also are not as active as brook trout in the summer. In the winter just the opposite is true. They can be caught in 2' of water and are usually aggressive.
