Eary Season Regs. Question

Recommended Posts

So, if I'm hunting early goose on water is it OK for me to also put out some duck decoys to make my spread look realistic? I'm thinking it's probably not a good idea as a CO could see that as "intent" to shoot ducks.

What are some of your thoughts?

Yeah, I wasn't going to mix them in with the honkers but rather put them 60-70 yards down the shoreline. That's what I'm seeing on local ponds now is groups of ducks and geese about that far apart, and I'd like to replicate that, if legal.

I would think a quick call to your local CO would be a good idea. If you called them and stated your intent (or non-intent in this case) before they roll up on you with duck decoys out, the conversation may be a little more friendly. Remember their job, along with educating.... is to enforce the law so if they have no previous information on you, they will most likely treat you as a potential law breaker.

I'd recommend against it, as it opens you up for question of intent no matter what the circumstances.

I have also heard that geese typically hate ducks (but ducks don't mind geese), so it may not work to your advantage having them even 70 yards out.
