High idle speed

Recommended Posts

First off...2003 Dodge Dakota with the (woefully underpowered) 3.9L V-6, automatic transmission.

Normal idle speed for this has been about 700 RPM, but lately I have noticed a high idle speed. It doesn't happen when I am stopped at a stoplight or stopsign, for example...when it is in gear and I am holding it at a stop with the brake, the idle is "normal" at about 700 RPM (give or take).

But when I put it in park, the idle jumps to around 1050 RPM. It is still a fairly smooth idle; it doesn't rev/fade, but just idles a bit high.

Any insight as to what can be going on?
