Guest
I have a bent skeg. Can this be cutoff and weled back with aluminum wire? Bend it without breaking? How should I fix it since it is shaped like a "(" ?Thanks
flipper
I straightened a badly bent one on a 40 hp Johnson by clamping it between two pieces of hardwood and adding shims where I needed more pressure. It took time and patience but I ended up with a straight skag. A few blows with a mallot helped but make sure just to pound on the wood.

Guest
I will try clamping first. For the welding, do you know if it was aluminum wire or heleoarched?Has anyone use a Skeggard?
Guest
About 5 years ago I bent one and had a welding friend cut it off and weld a matching new piece on and repaint. It worked and looked like new and the new owner of this motor still hasn't had problems. Total cost was about 10 bucks.

Fishbitten
I took mine to the prop shop in Duluth, they were very busy and did not straighten it to my satisfaction and when I pointed that out he said I could leave my boat for 3-4 days or clamp wood to it and bang away because that's all they were going to do. Note if it were to break they had the means to weld it so be cautious. Mine turned out fine.
Steve Foss
Skegs are pretty soft metal, and can usually be bent back just fine in the home shop with the techniques mentioned here. Don't spend money if you don't have to. ------------------"Worry less, fish more."Steve Foss[email protected]
