Brule river/Superior Trout fishing?

Hello all, I'm heading up to Grand Marais in a couple weeks, but will only be there for a few days. I'm not taking my boat, but I would still like to get some fishing done. I would like to try fishing for trout, and I started thinking that I'd like to try where the Brule river feeds into Lake Superior.

My first question being, is it even a fishable area from shore? If so, what would be my best bet as far as lures go? I am planning on taking a couple spoons and a few spinners. If it's not fishable, could someone point me in the direction of a good spot near Grand Marais for me to try my luck?

Thanks - Dusty

From the shore of Lake Superior you can catch Lake Trout and Salmon...now this is a hit and miss thing. I've gone out for hours and all i caught was some sun, and other times it can be more fruitful. Use spoons, crocidiles and little cleos and kastmasters work well. Anything with silver or gold on it will do the trick. If you fish the Brule river, remember you can only use single hooks (no treble hooks allowed). There will only be steelhead smolt(6 in rainbows and small brookies in the Brule, which all have to be released) If you head up the Gunflint there are many fishing opportunities, small streams with brook trout, and many lakes that the MN DNR stocks with Rainbow, Splake, and Brown trout. One of my favorites is Kimball Lake. If you go to these lakes a canoe would be great, but they are very fishable from shore. Bobber rigs with a small worm or wax worm underneath work great. Bottom rigs with a floating worm are awesome, and you can also cast spinners and small spoons. These little trout are dang tasty too. Dont forget you will be surrounded by a ton of great warm water species lakes too...walleyes, smallmouth, and pike. If you want any more information go to the Minnesota DNR HSOforum..there is a ton of useful information such as the Lake Finder, which has almost all the lakes, and creel survey information on the lakes with maps included. Good luck and post a report with pics when you get back!

Thanks for the advice! I've fished a few lakes on the Gunflint in the past (Devil track and Two Island are my favorites.) I've never tried fishing Superior, and have never fished for lake trout or salmon, so I'm really interested in going after them.

Well, I didn't get to spend as much time fishing as I wanted to. Fished in Grand Marais near Artist's Point behind the Coast Guard station, tried tossing a KastMaster and a gold Mepps spinner, got a hit or two, but got skunked. We went up the Gunflint to try Kimball and Mink lakes. Managed to get a tiny Perch on the size 3 gold spinner at Kimball, and got skunked at Mink. We didn't get a chance to fish the Brule, it's definitely on the list for next year though.
