Rod holders

Biker717

Question

I have and older starcraft fish/ski, it is fiberglass. I want to install rod holders, but I am not sure about how to mount them? Do I drill through the fiber glass and just mount them with the 4 screws, or is there a better way? Thanks for any advise.

I wouldn't use screws if they are meant to grip into the fiberglass (similar to a wood screw or sheetrock screw). If you're going to go the drill holes route, I would mark the hole locations, drill the holes, then use stainless steel machine screws or bolts, with a washer and a nut on the under/inside. This will spread out the stress that could be put on the glass.

(if in the original post you were referring to machine screws, then disregard)

Thank you for the help. I was kinda thinking about putting a piece of wood or sheet metal on each side of the fiber glass, and using bolts. I was just concerned that the fiberglass may crack, due to the pressure of the rod pulling against it.

Just make sure your using stainless steel vs regular or zinc plated hardware. This will prevent rust from corroding the hardware and making a mess of your boat.

A set up like this can be quite strong. Compare it to an add on ski pylon that gets bolted to the fiberglass. Those have a lot of torque placed on them. Far less than a fishing pole should exert.

Vary true, I hadn't thought about that. I got the boat for free, and I am trying to convert it to more of a fishing boat. I have already done a ton of work to it, and I am close to having it to wear I want it.
