al jr
i am doing some research on the minnesota governors fishing opener for a school project. does anyone know any information about the history of the opener? I already know the general history, but i would like to hear about what has happened the last 55 years that it has taken place. like the story about the governor that took off in his boat without untieing it from the dock. anecdotal and personal stories would be great as long as they are at least mostly true (the project is for a MN history class). I would also like to hear who everyone thinks was the best and worst governor (as far as fishing goes ) and why. i would really appreciate the help, thanks. Polar Bear
al, I seem to remember a Time Magazine cover from the early '70s with Gov. Wendy Anderson fishing from a boat boasting about the "good life in Minnesota". He was an avid outdoorsman. There must be HSOforum somewhere displaying the Time covers from the past. Good luck. Deemo
Sorry Al. Not sure which one was best..from what I can remember the only time they made news was when one actually caught a walleye. They usually were better at golf than fishing.
Aquaman01
The Mpls Star Trib had an article in last year's outdoor section, Sunday after opener, that mentioned Jesse's total for the day, and I think he actually caught fish. ------------------Aquaman<')}}}}}><{Peace and Fishes
Sturgeon46
Arne Carlson had to be the worst fisherman. I don't think he ever caught a walleye in eight Governor's openers.
guideman
There is no doubt Arnie was the worst!!I was one of the guides for the media the last year that Arnie was Govenor. It took place in Redwing that year, we followed the Gov's pontoon around all morning. He had the Great Terry Tuma as a guideand all the boats around them were catching fish. The gov had a few good chances but alass came up emty...again.------------------Terry "Ace" SjobergAce guide service.aceguideservice.com218-753-2612[email protected]
Guest
The best fisherman Gov. has to be Jesse "The Body", he's the only one in my forty plus years of memory that actually caught his own fish or had any fish caught in his boat. Of course he did go out and fish for more than 2 hours.
pikehunter
Al Jr., As far as your paper goes, I would search stories from the metro newspapers and see if you could find someone at one of them who has covered many of these gov. openers and ask them a few questions. There are probably a lot of great anectdotal stories that never make it to print.Good Luck!
