i got a 16 ft lund that i use both for fishing and hunting on swan and middle lakes which are marsh's... a local marine shop has a 01 mercury 25 horse carb 4-stroke engine. i was wondering how well would that motor work on the marsh? with weeds, mud etc.. i had got a 2-stroke 25 mercury also but it doesnt run right and burns a ton of fuel so i wanted to up grade.. would this 4 stroke be a good option? Thanks!

If your serious about running shallow, mud, rice, lillypads, reeds, i would look at a mud motor. I tried running a outboard through that junk and nearly wrecked the motor and got myself in some seroius late season, ice on the lake trouble. Mud motors have no water pump to clog and will push your boat through inches of water and cut through the thickest weeds, junk you can find. Most are set up for a short transom (15") but they make models for a 20" transom.

They are not the best for fishing, but come duck season it will all be worth it.

I can run the otter tail river upstream for miles where others can only float it with the current because the water is a foot deep or less.

I got lucky and found one cheap at an auction. I was the best money on outdoor gear i ever spent. Period.
