sort of new to walleye fishing.....

Recommended Posts

Hello all,

I grew up fishing with my dad and uncle. We always trolled for Pike all day everytime pretty much. That's all they really liked. Don't get me wrong I loved it too but.... I'd like to try for walleyes but feel like I just don't have the "know how" like what sort of set-up and the ways to target and go after them. Any advice for the novice walleye fisherman?

Thanks.

I always troll for walleyes but I am using my electric trolling motor and then will pull a jig or a Lindy rig. I like to move around structure a certain depth like 16' to start with and see if I see any on the graph or catch any fish. If it is sunny I will try 18' and if it is cloudy I will go to 14' until I find some fish or move on to the next spot. If I am on a big lake with a big expanse of sand or gravel like Mille Lacs or Winnibigosh I might just drift from 20' to 6' or drift parallel to shore at different depths. If you find something that works then you just have to repeat the same pattern as long as it is working. I know that this weekend I will first try shiners and a 3/16oz jig cause I can always catch them with that setup. The hard part will be finding them and at what speed do they want the bait presented to them.
