60 hp merc tiller gets stuck in reverse

I have a 2000 Merc tiller that sometimes gets stuck in reverse. Seems to go from forward to neutral no problem but goes hard into reverse and sometimes wont come out. Same motor coughs when throttling down. Any help ? Thanks guys.

Are you able to tell where the binding is coming from? Does the shifter feel like it is binding or does it move freely and feels like it may be binding elsewhere? What if you have the engine turned off, does it seem any different?

Also, do you have a tach and what is you idle rpm? If it is idling too high it will be hard to take out of gear.
