Some (Christmas bought) Locality Agates that I've added to my locker.

Recommended Posts

Firstly it's been more than a bit since I've added some Agate-zine here on HSO & for that I am abashed to say. I like chipping in here and chiming in on the lade's that I find in Buckeye Country; and I like propping others on their stashes as well. Typically I put up stills of stuff I've found myself, but I thought it was high time to share some collector caliber Agates I've sniped and won on HSO-Classifieds. These specimens will dwarf alot of The Ohioan found material I've come across due to the material being more lithic and silica rich - so get ready for a toss up of my good stuff. The first up on my bracket of agates is a hummocky peeler: a 2lb & 1.80 Oz Carnelian agate from Madagascar; I scored this one for $45.00 (did they see me coming or was it worth it?)

Next up is a grab bag lot of Gobi Desert: Mongolian Agates & Jasper (which typically resemble Libyan Desert Glass with their pocked out surface and tempered-sand salmon color) being so the rarer Gobi Agates are with eyes & fortification banding. Gobi Agates are particularly nifty due to their xeric and dust devil ridden homeland (The Gobi) with it's high winds and sand shearing emery that balds away at and retools the agates until they look like some sort of taffies or Wonka candies. See what I mean:

And a threes to this company is a dusky forest blue/green (4 0z) Laker that had some interesting color-play on it's face; as well as some tree ringed target like eyes on it's backside.

As for the ender of the four: for you Minnesota/Michigan Agateers that prowl HSO-Classifieds you may know of this similar breed of Agates that look akin to you're own; called Rain-flower Agate: from Nanijing,China. Lets just say I pined away for weeks at a (certain) HSO-Classifieds sellers store and watched new lots come in an out of his queue until I found my "Shining Trapezohedron" of agates. An extremely dark, florid Rainflower that I had to nab; complete with two rooms, large key back circles, and some darned snazzy handiwork by mother nature in bands. This is definitely the best Agate I own, and weighty for a Rainflower Agate as they run in size. Here it is: I call it my Oni Stone.

Ps. I might be up in Pinckney MI for a bid: for some Winterized Camping inside a snow cave; and so I've heard that Jackson MI (50 minutes) away has an unnamed variety of Agate? When I'm there I'll try my hand at finding one near a water supply or gravel run. Also here's a listed agate from Jackson:

Thanks EggMan; so I was spot on in thinking that Agateer's from Michigan had seen some Rain flower Cobble's - I thought you'd had ken enough to know of them for sure. So how goes it on you're front; have you decamped from home anytime in 09 or 2010 and come across some Kapital (with a K) Agates. I've been slogging through snow drift to a yielding gravel run during the on and off melt periods in Ohio and have managed to find two of my nicest ever "shake-sized" fortification agates. How about you; any stunners or ship shape nodules as of late?

    • Truly sorry to hear that duffman! I know that feeling.  Keep the good memories
    • Chamois passed away this weekend a couple days short of her 13th bday. What a great dog to hang out with here at home and on distant adventures. Gonna miss ya big time my little big girl.
    • Sounds pretty sweet, alright. I will check them out, thanks.
    • If you really want to treat your wife (and yourself) with a remote operated trolling motor, the Minn Kota Ulterra is about easy as it gets.  Auto stow and deploy is pretty awesome.  You just have to turn the motor on when you go out and that the last time you have to touch it.   24V 80lb.  60 inch shaft is probably the right length for your boat.  They ain’t cheap - about $3k - but neither one of you would have to leave your seat to use it all day.
    • Wanderer, thanks for your reply. I do intend for it to be 24 volt, with a thrust of 70-80. Spot lock is a must (my wife is looking forward to not being the anchor person any more).  With my old boat we did quite a lot of pulling shad raps and hot n tots, using the trolling motor. Unlikely that we will fish in whitecaps, did plenty of that when I was younger. I also need a wireless remote, not going back to a foot pedal. We do a fair amount of bobber fishing. I don't think I will bother with a depth finder on the trolling motor. I am leaning toward moving my Garmin depth finder from my old boat to the new one, just because I am so used to it and it works well for me. I am 70 years old and kinda set in my ways...
    • Dang, new content and now answers.   First, congrats on the new boat!   My recommendation is to get the most thrust you can in 24V, assuming a boat that size isn’t running 36V.  80 might be tops?  I’m partial to MinnKota.     How do you plan to use the trolling motor is an important question too.     All weather or just nice weather?   Casting a lot or bait dragging?   Bobber or panfish fishing?   Spot lock?  Networked with depth finders?  What brand of depth finders?
    • We have bought a new boat, which we will be picking up this spring. It is an Alumacraft Competitor 165 sport with a 90 horse Yamaha motor. I will be buying and installing a trolling motor,  wondering if I can get some recommendations on what pound thrust I will want for this boat?  Also, I will be selling my old boat, is there a good way to determine the value on an older boat ( mid-80's with a 75 horse 2-stroke  Mariner motor)  I will appreciate any help with these questions.
