got snow??

Recommended Posts

I got out on a pond at about 5:00 tonight. I have found that the leading edge of a snowstorm often turns the fish on, so I decided to get out. The snow was coming down pretty good, and the fish were very aggressive right when I got out. I marked several fish that would shoot up two or three feet to hit my bait, and I assumed they were small largemouth, who tend to do that. Tonight those chasers were bluegill.

The last week or so the bite has peaked from about 5:30 to 6:00 PM, but tonight it slowed down a little after 5:30. I plan on getting out early tomorrow morning before the cold front, high pressure, and wind come through later in the day. Those conditions usually slow the fishing down in the winter, and pretty much any other time of year.

I'm still catching some bluegill and the occasional crappie or bass on the ponds in Johnson County, but the fish are getting pickier the longer the snow and ice stay on.

I still hit a decent bite right around sunrise and sunset, but that window is getting shorter and shorter.
