'02 Saturn SL throwing codes

Recommended Posts

Hey guys,

No better place to ask than here. My girlfriend's Saturn has thrown a couple of codes and run a little funny lately.

Codes are as follows:

P0128

Coolant temp below thermostat regulating temp

P0410

Secondary air injection system malfunction

P0442

Evap emission control system leak (small)

I have done some searching and some sites say it could be EGR related, some say Air Pump and lines. I am guessing the thermostat is stuck partially open, because the car does heat up, but doesn't overheat, though it is taking a little longer to heat up than last winter. Also upon cold start-up, the engine stutters a little bit and the rpms surge up and down for about 10 seconds, then it runs fine. From the sounds of things, it does seem like something with the air pump may be amiss. I have read that a couple fuses on the air pump system may be at fault, and to check them before replacing the pump, but I have no clue where to look for them.

Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

SOHC or DOCH 0r the 8th letter of the vin.

P0128 almost always a stuck t-stat.

P0442 could be solved with a coolant temp sensor and pigtail. It sounds wierd but there is a TSB for that. It may also cure the P0128 code but the t-stat is more likely.

P0410 - secondary air is not the EGR. It has to do with the air pump or the switching valve. I'll have to check into that code later today.

Surging idle at start up - vacuum leak! I would use some carb spray and spray around the intake where it bolts to the head. It's really common for them to fain especially around the number one runner.

p.s. good to here from you!

DOHC.

I was planning to do a t-stat for her to start. I will check for vacuum leaks tonight when she gets home.

I have read so many different things about the P0410 code now, it could be a number of different issues with that one.

Maybe I can just come on down to your shop one of these days. Need to catch up anyway.

the p0128 could be a stuck t-stat or temp sensor.

the temp sensor will not fix the p0442, this is an evap leak code. you have a fuel vapor leak somewhere. possibly a line or a fuel cap leaking.

the p0410 is more than likely related to or caused by the air pump for the exhaust system. this is an air pump that pumps air into the exhaust system to aid in burning excess fuel in the exhaust.

I chased an evap leak on a saturn until I was blue in the face. I finally found a TSB that suggested if no leaks where found to replace the coolant temp sensor and pigtail. The vehicle never came back for the evap code after that. Maybe it was a P044? somthing else but for whatever reason it can cause an evap code

I read a couple on identifix that have run into the same issue in the past as well.

The P0442 is a small evap leak. I can see where the pigtail could repair an issue, if the power wire has a shared splice that the pigtail repaired. But the temp sensor should have nothing to do with evap leaks..... Though I fix Fords for a living, and very rarely see a saturn(unless its my wife's newer vue).

From what I understood at the time it has something to do with the way it calculates how fast it should drop fuel tank pressure based on engine temp vs. intake air temp. if either of those are off than the algorithms programed into the PCM will misjudge the amount of vapor flow that should be occurring and flag an evap leak code.

I smoked checked the one I worked on half a dozen time and cleared the code only to have it come back a few weeks later with the same code.

Working on Fords you should be able to appreciate other manufacturers driveability quirks. Lord knows you have seen enough of them!! shockedgrin
