PLEASE Talk to kids about ice safety now!

Recommended Posts

We will likely see greatly fluctuating river levels into early winter on Rivers and their tribs. All rivers should be viewed with extreme caution, anywhere and at any time.

So lets all be very-very-very cautious on all the ice!

River ice is treacherous on a good day, early season river ice can be a killer.

If you have kids or see kids anywhere near rivers anytime soon. Please, be sure to strongly advise them to stay Completely off the ice. Also to stay clear of the slippery banks near the river ice.

Ever year we hear of such tragedies on rivers. Some make it out, many do not.

Lets all be safe and do what we can to promote safety on all ice and especially near rivers.

Many who frequent this site have opportunities to help educate ice safety in many venues, to the young and to the more experienced alike. Please do so whenever possible.

Lets all make this a safe and productive ice season.

Well put Eddy, always take caution when heading out on the ice. Ice can be weak even in the midwinter months when temps are below zero. Especially in rivers where water can be ever changing.

When I fish during early ice I seldom go alone. You should go with someone else incase something happens. Check ice conditions before you head onto the lake. Local baitshops are a good place to ask, or just post here on the site, I'm sure someone can help you out. Not worth the risk of "guessing" the ice is ok. And just because you see someone else out on the ice doesn't mean that its safe. That person on the ice could have taken a different route to get where they are. Often times in the past I've had to walk down shore a ways before I could reach safe ice, even though the ice right in front of the access looks ok. When in doubt, don't go out. (I didn't intend that to rhyme smile.gif )

Just be safe, and use common sense.

Have a safe ice fishing season and enjoy the fun!

Good Fishin,
Matt
