2003 Tiburon Question PLEASE PLEASE HELP.......

Recommended Posts

I have an 03 Tiburon that when driving will will jolt and shake sometimes violently. The first time it happened I was trying to pass a car. Now when driving it it seems to be doing it at low speeds depending on how much gas you give it.

I brought it in to one guy who said it simply needs a tune up. So I did and what do ya know it still is doing it. Told ya so. Just got home from Aamco where they did a Trans scan and said they really don't know what it is but said as far as they can tell the engine including the Transmission is fine. They also said they have never seen this before, I quote "Its weird".

They did read 2 codes that were stored though.

1. Map sensor circuit low

2. Output speed sensor circuit

They said that the speed sensor is possibly causing ABS or Traction control to activate.

Please any and all info on fixing the situation is welcome along with any other questions you may have.

The check engine light is currently on right?

The output speed sensor should be a slam dunk for the Aamco guys to figure out? The output speed sensor is used to confirm the correct output of the transmission as well as feed the vehicle speed to the computer and speedometer (basically).

The output speed sensor would not have anything to do with the ABS/traction control as they use the wheel speed sensors to gather information. If the vehicle had some variation of stability control than the output speed sensor may be used as well as a host of other sensors, as an input to determine what course of action was needed.

If the check engine light is on than a theoretically traction control and stability control should be disabled. This is because the two systems no longer have any idea if the vehicle is capable of producing the performance that the two systems use as a base.

If the MAF sensor is flaking out it can cause all kinds of really goofy problems. from lean missfires, no power, no start, start and stall, poor idle, etc.

It should be pretty straight forward as far as figuring out if these two items are related to your symptom. It can't be down without having a scan tool capable of showing data.

There is no check engine light on.

The slam dunk was not at the Aamco I went to I guess. They could give me no definite answer as to what the problem is.

Brad I hope your right. Sounds cheaper than a tranny would be.

Appointment on Wednesday with Hyundai. I basically told them you made it, you better be able to fix it.

Subject: Wheel speed sensor may cause engine-control problems.

Vehicle Involved:

2003 Hyundai Tiburon

Condition: Some Hyundai’s without Anti Lock Brakes are equipped with wheel speed sensors. Vehicles listed above that have 2.0 liter 4 cylinder engines use the front right wheel speed sensor input for engine control data. In these vehicles the engine control computer compares the right front wheel speed sensor signal to the vehicle speed sensor signal. The comparison of signals tells the computer if the car is being driven on a rough road. If this is so, the computer shuts down the engine misfire monitoring system. If the engine control system does not receive a signal from the wheel speed sensors, it will illuminate the check engine light. Trouble code P1502 “Short or open wheel speed sensor circuit.” You can check the circuit with a digital volt-ohmmeter. Resistance should read about 1.4k ohms.

Hyundai says I need a new Tranny put in that will cost me around $2100.00 bucks. So tonight I think I'll have about 21 beers and figure out where to get that money from. frown I really question why Aamco the Tranny Experts (or so they claim) couldn't tell me that.

    • Truly sorry to hear that duffman! I know that feeling.  Keep the good memories
    • Chamois passed away this weekend a couple days short of her 13th bday. What a great dog to hang out with here at home and on distant adventures. Gonna miss ya big time my little big girl.
    • Sounds pretty sweet, alright. I will check them out, thanks.
    • If you really want to treat your wife (and yourself) with a remote operated trolling motor, the Minn Kota Ulterra is about easy as it gets.  Auto stow and deploy is pretty awesome.  You just have to turn the motor on when you go out and that the last time you have to touch it.   24V 80lb.  60 inch shaft is probably the right length for your boat.  They ain’t cheap - about $3k - but neither one of you would have to leave your seat to use it all day.
    • Wanderer, thanks for your reply. I do intend for it to be 24 volt, with a thrust of 70-80. Spot lock is a must (my wife is looking forward to not being the anchor person any more).  With my old boat we did quite a lot of pulling shad raps and hot n tots, using the trolling motor. Unlikely that we will fish in whitecaps, did plenty of that when I was younger. I also need a wireless remote, not going back to a foot pedal. We do a fair amount of bobber fishing. I don't think I will bother with a depth finder on the trolling motor. I am leaning toward moving my Garmin depth finder from my old boat to the new one, just because I am so used to it and it works well for me. I am 70 years old and kinda set in my ways...
    • Dang, new content and now answers.   First, congrats on the new boat!   My recommendation is to get the most thrust you can in 24V, assuming a boat that size isn’t running 36V.  80 might be tops?  I’m partial to MinnKota.     How do you plan to use the trolling motor is an important question too.     All weather or just nice weather?   Casting a lot or bait dragging?   Bobber or panfish fishing?   Spot lock?  Networked with depth finders?  What brand of depth finders?
    • We have bought a new boat, which we will be picking up this spring. It is an Alumacraft Competitor 165 sport with a 90 horse Yamaha motor. I will be buying and installing a trolling motor,  wondering if I can get some recommendations on what pound thrust I will want for this boat?  Also, I will be selling my old boat, is there a good way to determine the value on an older boat ( mid-80's with a 75 horse 2-stroke  Mariner motor)  I will appreciate any help with these questions.
