Onions

Bending them over doesn't increase size.It hurries drying out for storage.Loosening the dirt around them will help increase size.

I wouldn't bend them over until at least half of them do it on their own.

They start bulbing in late June according to daylight hours.Basically size of onions depends on how large the tops are at the time of bulbing......which is why always plant onions as early as possible to get the tops at maximun size.I try to get them in the ground by mid April if possible.Onions are tough and even snow won't set them back.

They will be as large as they will get by the first week of August and the tops will start to weaken and fall over.Pull them out by mid-august,bunch them with twine and hang them in the garage until it is time to take them in the house in November.

To get the largest onions, use plants instead of sets.Candy is the best onion to plant here up north.Mine reach softball size.
